October 1st, 2020 Our History: Blogging Prompts for Ace Week 2020
In the past, we’ve selected different blogging prompts for each day of Ace Week (for an example, you can check out our prompts from 2019). This year, we’re doing things a bit differently, and we’ve chosen one overarching theme for the entire week.
Our theme this year is “Our History.” In choosing this theme, we hope to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Ace Week as well as encourage a moment of reflection on the personal and community histories that brought us to where we are today.
In that spirit, we’ve put together a list of blogging prompts for the week. Please feel free to use them in whatever way works for you. You can choose one prompt to focus on, pick a different one for each day of the week, or think of your own topic relating to the theme to write about.
Community History
Choose a specific topic in ace history and write an informative post about that topic. For example, topics might include: pre-internet ace history, the way our language has evolved over time, the history of in-person ace communities, etc.
Consider ace community history with a focus on intersectionality. How have ace communities supported or failed to support aces who are Black, Indigenous, people of color, disabled, neurodivergent, trans, or any other marginalized group? What can we learn from our past?
What advice do you have for others as they think and write about ace community history?
If you were active or present in ace communities ten years ago, reflect on what has changed and what has stayed the same.
Are there any topics relating to ace community history that you’d like to learn more about? How can we do a better job of preserving and sharing history going into the future?
Personal History
Reflect on your personal history of identifying under the asexual umbrella. When and how did you know you were ace and find the words to describe your place under that umbrella? What was it like for you before you realized you were ace? How has your self-acceptance evolved over time?
Where were you ten years ago in your journey to accept your ace identity? If you could send a message to yourself from ten years ago, what would you tell yourself?
Reflect on your personal involvement with specific ace communities (a local meetup group, a discord server, etc.). How did your involvement in those communities have an impact on your life?
Are there any moments or topics in ace community history that hold personal importance for you?
Looking to the Future
What about current ace communities do you want to be remembered in the future? How can we go about preserving this history?
What would you like to see change in ace communities over the course of the next ten years?
Where do you hope to be in ten years, and how does your ace identity have an impact on your hopes for the future?
Thank you to our volunteer Sophie Ciurlik-Rittenbaum for her contributions to this list of prompts.
